Andy Carroll has been recalled to the England squad for the friendly matches against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil, with the Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy the only fresh face named by Roy Hodgson.
Hodgson had been considering selecting Swansea City's Wayne Routledge and Leon Britton in the absence of the injured midfielders Steven Gerrard and Jack Wilshere, and had also admitted that Aston Villa's youngsters Matthew Lowton and Ashley Westwood had impressed him.
